Copywriting: Start A Recession-proof Home Business
Perhaps you’ve considered starting a freelance copywriting service. If so, this would be a fantastic time, despite the current economic climate. You can work from your own home and can start in your spare time, so it’s a fantastic home-based business. Even if you face the worst and find yourself out of work, you will have already started on a new career path.
Copywriting will always be around, no matter what state the nation is in. As long as sellers are selling and buyers are buying, there will be a place for copywriters.
Below are three points to keep in mind as you start your own freelance copywriting service.
1. Start by making your copywriting portfolio. When you offer copywriting services to a potential client, they will want to see what you are capable of. So be sure to have writing samples with you at all times. The samples can be any copywriting work you have done in the past. But what if you don’t have any past copywriting experience?
You have two options. First, you can find any service or manufactured goods, and simply write copy for it. Make a press release, web copy, or sample ads for it. Second, you can offer free copywriting work to local charities or organizations.
Your local schools and organizations are always looking for volunteer copywriters, so write a few pages of newsletter content and some advertising just for the experience and for your portfolio.
2. At first, try getting clients by promoting your copywriting services online and offline. Build a website, and place your portfolio there. Once your portfolio is set up, send potential clients there by promoting your services locally. If you can invest, advertise in your area, or on the Internet.
3. When you’re comfortable, try approaching agencies locally for copywriting work. Local jobs are often best when you’re just getting started. You can contact management agencies, ad agencies, and graphic design firms for copywriting work. Even though an agency may not have work for you right now, they are always getting new jobs and new clients, and often contract out copywriting jobs. Networking with local agencies and people in the business community will give you a solid base to build your freelance copywriting business on.
Keep these three steps in mind as you start your freelance copywriting career; your new career is recession-proof and offers a high potential for income.
